Nelson Mandela believed that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. While education equips people with knowledge and qualifications, success in today’s world also depends on the ability to understand ourselves, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, and respond constructively to life’s challenges. These are the human skills that emotional intelligence develops.
As part of our Mandela Month activities, the Centre for Emotional Intelligence (CEQ) had the privilege of visiting Vunanimfundo Adult Education and Training (AET) Centre in Benoni to facilitate an Emotional Intelligence Workshop under the theme, “Emotional Intelligence as a Tool for Personal and Academic Success.”
Vunanimfundo AET Centre plays an invaluable role in our education system by providing adults with a second opportunity to complete or improve their National Senior Certificate. Behind every learner is a unique story of resilience, determination, and the courage to begin again. Many are balancing work, family responsibilities, financial pressures, and personal setbacks while pursuing their education.
Recognising these realities, our workshop focused not only on academic success but also on the emotional skills needed to overcome obstacles. Through practical discussions and interactive activities, participants explored emotional awareness, emotional regulation, resilience, communication, and the role these skills play in achieving both personal and educational goals.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was witnessing learners openly reflect on their experiences, share the challenges they face, and recognise that emotional intelligence is not an inborn talent but a set of skills that can be learned and strengthened over time. Creating safe spaces for these conversations is essential if we are serious about building healthier individuals, stronger communities, and more resilient workplaces.
At CEQ, we believe that emotional intelligence should not be viewed as an optional life skill. It is a foundational competency that complements academic learning and prepares people for success in education, employment, leadership, and everyday life. As South Africa’s School for Human Skills, we remain committed to making emotional intelligence education accessible to learners of all ages.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Gauteng Department of Social Development for recommending Vunanimfundo AET Centre, the school’s management and staff for their warm hospitality, every learner who participated with enthusiasm, and City Lodge Hotels for generously sponsoring refreshments for the workshop.
As we continue to honour Mandela’s legacy, may we remember that investing in people means investing not only in what they know, but also in how they understand themselves and relate to others. Building a more emotionally intelligent society begins with education.
